Tribute & Message From The Family

Richard Williams Gressard

Richard Williams Gressard of Kent, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 after a short illness. He was born July 18, 1952 to William M and Margaret Fageol Gressard and was a graduate of Kent State University High School and Kent State University.

He was president and owner of The Tavern At Twin Lakes for the past 30 years. It was his pride and his joy and that was evident when one walked into his welcoming place. He really did appreciate his family and friends and so many great customers for helping to make his business such an amazing success.

Richard had been a resident of Portage County and Franklin Township most all of his life, and he treasured the history his family shared with the area and was proud to be a descendant of the Fageols, Merrills, Haymakers, and Olins.

He had many passions in life, including golf, which he was exceptional at. One of the highlights of his life was winning the Twin Lakes Country Club golf championship, proudly following his father's 14 previous wins.

He had a love of warmth, sunshine, water, his 1972 blue Ford "Scooby Doo" van as well as a love for animals always present in his life, Lemon the cockatoo.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Margaret. He is survived by his siblings, Bill (Cheri), Bob, and Gwen; aunts, Betty Gressard and Esther Gressard; and numerous cousins all over the country. He also leaves so many special friends - way too many to list. He also had a special bond with and will be greatly missed by his "Tavern Girls", and his many employees past and present. He leaves us to remember his beautiful smile and his welcoming and warm personality.

Special thanks to all who cared for Richard at University Hospitals – ICU and Hospice Palliative care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Rose's Rescue, in Richard's name or to your local ASPCA. Donations may also be made to University Hospitals Hospice care.

Per Richard's request, there will be no funeral service, but a celebration party of his life at a later date.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I really wanted to talk to you today. I was thinking of our trip through Florida all the way to Key West. You were so kind and took care of your new van all day. We haven't talked much since the mid 70s. I never forgot you and wanted to reminisce. I am so sorry to hear this difficult news. My deepest sympathy to your family and all your friends. I cannot believe you are gone. This is really sad, Dick.

I spent a lot of time at the tavern with friends way back. I say acquaintance now, as it had been years since I was home. I still wear my Twin Lakes t-shirt and remember Richard fondly. We had some great times there. I was just looking through old photos last week and found numerous ones from the Tavern.

I am sure he will be missed. Too young to be gone. We were about the same age. May he rest with God.

I just found this, and I am so sad. Our families are so tied together in my memories, your loss is ours. Richard...always Dicky to my mother...was so kind to my parents when they dined at the Tavern, he always made their evening special, and it meant the world to them, and to us.

With so much affection, Ellen (Dumm) Leebaw

Quick with wit and just as quick with a smile. I am at a deep loss for words. What comes to mind is what you told me many, many years ago..."Once a friend always a friend." You were that to me.

I will miss you brother. Thanks for the memories.

I am so shocked, saddened and sorry to hear about Richard's passing. He and my dad, Alan, were friends dating back 40 years. Richard even came out to his funeral in 2014, despite a few years falling out of regular contact-- he was that kind of guy. He was that same guy, fast with a smile and laugh, from when I met him as a small child to now at 41. I can only hope he is hanging with all of his old friends and catching up with everyone. Rest in peace, Richard!

Until we meet again, buddy. What's it been, about 50 years we've known each other, 45th grade at Franklin School. Fast forward and you were best man at my first wedding. Too many crazy stories to recall in this venue. Suffice it to say I already miss catching up over beers at the tavern every couple of years. Save me a seat at the bar upstairs senor, I'll see you down the road.

Richard had no idea how many lives he touched and influenced. Adam and I have many great memories and will never forget his smile or laugh. No matter how long it would be, he always made visits to the Tavern feel like coming home. God bless you Richard and so long friend.
