Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Aunt Joann and all the family,
We were very sad to hear that Uncle Ollie had passed on. He was an awesome Uncle to us, just as Aunt Joann has been our very favorite Aunt. For anyone who doesn't know she is sister to my late dad, Bruce Andrew Pickens. Over many years, they have both made the extra efforts to be a part of our lives and be close instead of distant relatives even though we live far apart, most of my family being in Alabama and other southern states. We have had so many enjoyable times- I was a toddler when they came to the lake with us, as I got older I traveled there to spend time with them and they always made me feel right at home. My favorite memories there are special trips including Sea World, a lake trip, shopping with permission to pick out something I liked, motorcycle rides, Aunt Joann's homemade blueberry muffins and Texas Sheet cake. Uncle Ollie was always active and fun during my visits. We looked forward to their visits each year on the way back from their Florida trips. Another favorite memory of Uncle Ollie is when I took him to the Barber Motorsports Park here in Leeds, Alabama. We visited the Motorcycle Museum which is quite impressive, housing hundreds of vintage motorcycles as well as a few vintage cars. Uncle Ollie was like a kid in a candy store! We managed to make it through the whole building and all along the way as we viewed the displays, he was an encyclopedia of knowledge and interesting stories. They had a vintage car there, I forget the type, but he said that when he was a kid working on the dairy farm, he had bought TWO of those cars by the time he was 16 years old. I was impressed. He really enjoyed the outing and said he would tell his friends back home that it would be worth the trip to go there. Uncle Ollie was always entertaining us with interesting conversations. Truly, Uncle Ollie was a most admirable and lovable man. We will always love him and keep him in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

A salute to Oliver Schneider, one of the "Greatest Generation"- whose members are now sadly dwindling. Uncle Ollie was known for his intelligence, ability to talk at length on any subject, his courage, and quick wit-he could turn a phrase with a double meaning.

So, Uncle Ollie -"The Lord bless and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace."
Numbers 6:24-26

Barb, Jack, Ruth, Susan,
We are all so very sad to learn of Uncle OJ's passing. I have told my mother and she sends her love along with ours. I have many happy memories of the times we spent together as kids in the '60's and talking to Uncle OJ on the phone. We will keep you all in our prayers, love, Chuck Schneider and family
